Canyon Springs Closure & Updates
Truckee Donner Land Trust, working with the Martis Fund, Mountain Area Preservation, and SOS Glenshire, acquired the Canyon Springs property in 2021, protecting the 290-acre open space near the Glenshire neighborhood.
Starting August 11, Truckee Donner Land Trust will begin a forest health project with the Truckee Fire Protection District, treating roughly 130 acres as part of a larger 500-acre project across eastern Truckee. The goal is to reduce wildfire risk, improve habitat, and protect the watershed. The property will be closed to the public for roughly one month. Stay tuned for updates, as well as future plans for trails, trailheads, and other stewardship activities.
YOU SAVED CANYON SPRINGS!
Our community stepped up to permanently protect and open to the public Canyon Springs, 290 acres of open space on the eastern edge of Truckee once and for all, THANK YOU!
Truckee Donner Land Trust, Mountain Area Preservation, SOS Glenshire and the Martis Fund teamed up to preserve this important piece of land forever. Special thanks to Tony Fadell and Danielle Lambert for their matching $850,000 gift that helped get us to the $11.6 million acquisition goal. But acquisition is only the beginning, and we need your help to care for the property. To build and maintain trails, and ensure the property is cared for in perpetuity, we need to raise an additional $900,000 – bringing us to a grand total of $12.5 million. January 2022 update: Truckee Town Council unanimously voted to grant $500,000 for stewardship of the property!

Permanently protected 290 acres of open space, wildlife habitat & watershed
Canyon Springs contains beautiful rolling hills of mixed conifer forest, sage and seasonal stream courses fed by springs with meadow and riparian habitat home to numerous species. The beleaguered Loyalton Truckee deer herd uses the property as part of their migration corridor between upland summer habitat and lower elevation wintering grounds. The property also protects wildlife corridors between the Martis Valley (including Waddle Ranch) and the Mt. Rose Wilderness Area.

Created public access for responsible and sustainable recreation
Truckee Donner Land Trust plans on building new trailheads, trails and signage free for the public to enjoy. Sustainably built trails will open up new recreation opportunities in a part of our community under-served for outdoor access, and help spread out outdoor recreation across our region as demand for such opportunity grows.
Ended three decades of contention over various development proposals
Canyon Springs has been proposed for numerous developments over the last thirty years, with potential negative impacts not only on the open space itself, but also on traffic (and associated greenhouse gas emissions) and wildfire risk. Preserving the land as open space prevents development in a high-severity-fire-danger area.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
