Closures at Canyon Springs, Lower Carpenter Valley, & Johnson Canyon
Canyon Springs Closure & Updates
Truckee Donner Land Trust, working with the Martis Fund, Mountain Area Preservation, and SOS Glenshire, acquired the Canyon Springs property in 2021, protecting the 290-acre open space near the Glenshire neighborhood.
Starting August 11, Truckee Donner Land Trust will begin a forest health project with the Truckee Fire Protection District, treating roughly 130 acres as part of a larger 500-acre project across eastern Truckee. The goal is to reduce wildfire risk, improve habitat, and protect the watershed. The property will be closed to the public for roughly one month. Stay tuned for updates, as well as future plans for trails, trailheads, and other stewardship activities.
Lower Carpenter Valley Closures & Updates
A rendering of the planned interpretive center.
Construction of the new Carpenter Valley Interpretive Center has started! Located part-way down the trail, it will offer information on the natural and cultural history of the landscape as well as information on local flora, fauna, meadows, and geology. The construction won’t close the trail, but there will be some noise and dust as work moves forward – we appreciate your understanding.
In September, the Land Trust will install a permanent restroom for visitors at the trailhead. There will be temporary closures of the parking area during construction. Limited parking is available along the dirt road – please do not block traffic or the gate.
Thanks to The Nature Conservancy and our neighbors at the Tahoe Donner Association for partnering on these projects.
Johnson Canyon Closures & Updates
Truckee Donner Land Trust is excited to announce improvements to our popular Johnson Canyon Trailhead, north of Interstate 80 at the western Donner Lake Interchange accessing the Land Trust’s Johnson Canyon open space. A new parking area will make year-round parking easier, safer, and more accessible. In addition, a new restroom will be constructed for visitors to use. During construction through August and into September, there will be partial and/or temporary closures to the existing parking area for visitor safety.
Johnson Canyon is popular year-round with a wide variety of users including hikers, bikers, runners, snowmobilers, backcountry skiers, and those looking for an accessible place to enjoy the snow and the outdoors.
A big thanks to Visit Truckee Tahoe, Nevada County, and the Truckee Trails Foundation for the funding support and partnership in this project.
